The Tacle mandarin is a triploid hybrid between the Monreal clementine and the Tarocco orange. The fruit is oblate in shape, has a "sparkling" flavor, and is seedless. The skin is smooth and thin, a deep orange color with anthocyanin pigmentation (reddish). It has a soft texture and is moderately adherent to the pulp. The pulp, like the peel, is deep orange with anthocyanin streaks. The plant is tall and has medium-sized thorns. Harvest begins in late December and continues through January. The cross with the Tarocco orange also gives it a high juice content. Researchers at the University of Calabria have also studied the antioxidant potential of Tacle® and its inhibitory activity against human amylase and lipase in vitro. Some particular characteristics could be ascribed to the significant content of glycosides, naringin and hesperidin, and in derived aglycones which have been shown in tests to be useful in various cardiovascular disorders, in particular during the treatment of hypertension.
