The Japanese medlar (Eriobotrya japonica) is a plant native to eastern China, where it is still cultivated, as well as in Japan, in warm-temperate regions. It is widespread in the United States and the Mediterranean region, primarily as an ornamental plant, while it is cultivated in Spain and Italy, in the province of Palermo and a small portion of Calabria. It belongs to the Rosaceae family, subfamily Pomoideae, but the genus is Eriobotrya, species japonica. It is an evergreen plant with large leaves that are twisted on the underside and a shallow root system. It bears fruit in early spring.
