It belongs to the Poncirus genus, related to Citrus. There are several accessions that differ mainly in the size of their flowers and the presence of suckers. The deciduous plant has a deep root system. It is mainly used as a rootstock for sweet orange and, in Japan, Satsuma. It significantly improves fruit quality and anthocyanin color. The plants are of medium growth. It is sensitive to iron deficiency, in soils rich in active limestone (over 4-5%), and to water shortages and excesses. It has moderate tolerance to salinity and attacks by Phytophthora spp. and Fusarium solani. It is tolerant to Tristeza (CTV), Psorosis (CPsV), and Xyloporosis (CCaVd), but is sensitive to Exocortis (CEVd). Unlike all other citrus fruits, it is not an evergreen and tolerates cold (up to -20 c).
