ARBEQUINA

Arbequina gets its name from its area of ​​origin, certainly near the town of Ieridano de Arbeca. It is the most important variety in Catalonia, where it occupies more than 55,000 hectares. It has also spread to the rest of Spain, especially in Andalusia. It is the reference variety for new super-intensive plantations, which is why it has been planted in many other countries besides Spain: France, the USA, Chile, Portugal, Italy, Tunisia, Morocco, Australia, Argentina... It has low vigor, an open habit, and a medium-high canopy density. It is considered self-fertilizing. It enters production early and has a high and consistent productivity. The fat yield is high and the quality of its olive oil is excellent. It has a high rooting capacity. MORPHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS: Leaf: Small, short, and medium-wide, elliptical-lanceolate shape. Fruit: Black when fully ripe. Small, spheroidal, and symmetrical. The apex is rounded and blunt. The maximum cross-section is circular and slightly offset toward the base. The pulp/pit relationship is average. Pit: Ovoid and symmetrical. The surface is rough, with a minimum of seven and a maximum of ten fibrovascular grooves grouped near the suture. The base and apex are rounded. The latter has a mucro. The maximum cross-section is circular and centered.
